Renewed Oakland theater brings hope to Uptown - San Francisco Chronicle

Last-minute lunchers were giddy Friday to find a table available at the swank restaurant Flora on Telegraph Avenue, which opened in the neighborhood a year ago and is buzzing with activity. Flora patrons have a front-row seat for viewing the Fox's dazzling marquee, which went live Thursday night at the theater's gala reopening.
Fox patrons - including state Attorney General and former Mayor Jerry Brown, who a decade ago beckoned housing developers to take a chance on Oakland, and Mayor Ron Dellums, who is calling for stepped-up safety patrols in the neighborhood - filled the terraces of the painstakingly restored 1928 movie house. They were feted with finger food and champagne while listening to live jazz.
The Fox sits near Broadway and Telegraph Avenue. The north-of-downtown hub has AC Transit bus lines converging near storefronts that hawk gold teeth, medical marijuana, high-end housewares and hundreds of newly constructed condos and apartments - many of which sit vacant.
