Walbert—2004 National Book Award nominee for Our Kind —offers a beautiful and kaleidoscopic view of the 20th century through the eyes of several generations of women in the Townsend family. The story begins with Dorothy Townsend, a turn-of-the-century British suffragist who dies in a hunger strike. From Dorothy's death, Walbert travels back and forth across time and continents to chronicle other acts of self-assertion by Dorothy's female descendants. Dorothy's daughter, Evelyn, travels to America after WWI to make her name in the world of science—and escape from her mother's infamy. Decades later, her niece, also named Dorothy, has a late-life crisis and gets arrested in 2003 for taking photos of an off-limits military base in Delaware. Dorothy's daughters, meanwhile, struggle to find meaning in their modern bourgeois urban existences. The novel takes in historical events from the social upheaval of pre-WWI Britain to VJ day in New York City, a feminist

A devoted Canada geese pair at Garden Grove Pond
Sunday, December 7, 2008
We received a phone call from a concerned gentleman by the name of Jay on Thursday regarding four geese stranded on a pond in Garden Grove. Jay said he had contacted Fort Whyte Alive about the geese and they had advised him not to feed them because they would not fly south and to do nothing about the geese. He didn't think that was the right thing to do because he remembered the recent news coverage about our eight stranded geese. He searched online and found our names, dialed 411 to get our phone number and contacted us.
We were not shocked to hear Fort Whyte Alive's advice because several other people had told us the same thing. We were saddened because such advise causes untold suffering to the geese. Geese that can fly have already gone south. We feed our geese from the end of March till they leave and every one of them left November 7. The only geese remaining in ponds at this time are those with wing injuries and their families who have decided to remain with them. To advise concerned folks not to feed the geese is to cause them to starve to death, a very sad and tragic fate that can so easily be avoided by the simple and kind act of offering them grain. So we advised Jay to bring them wild bird seed if he was unable to bring them cracked corn. He said the ice was thin on that particular pond and advised us not to get on it. And we advised him to contact Lisa at Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre about a possible rescue though with thin ice, we doubted that we could rescue these geese. In addition to offering food, Lisa also advised him to bring the geese hot water to drink. Now that's caring.
Since Garden Grove is 16 km from our house, we tried to contact Debbie, a lady who had contacted us about two geese with broken wings near her home. Debbie is closer to Garden Grove than we are so I tried, in vain, to contact her to feed the geese Thursday and Friday.
With windchills expected to...
