Two Oceanside boxers to make pro debuts - San Diego Union Tribune
For most of the past decade, Mike Robinson has thought about a career in boxing.
Once, it was an arm injury that got in the way. Several times, he stopped going to the gym. And weight – well, it's been an issue.
But at 34, the Oceanside resident realized the pugilistic clock was ticking.
“If I'm going to be the champion, and that's the idea to being in boxing, I decided I better get started,” Robinson said this week.
So Thursday night, Robinson will launch his pro boxing career on a card that includes the professional debut of two other fighters – Eric Beach of Oceanside and Mario Angeles of Mexico.
Beach and Angeles are paired in a four-round welterweight match on the card at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in San Diego.
Robinson will be fighting Andre Carthon in a heavyweight match.
“I can't remember another card where I had three fighters making their pro debuts,” promoter Bobby DePhilippis said. “Debuts are always interesting. There are a lot of guys who retire at 0-1.”
