PASSAGES » Read obituaries of newsmakersLONG BEACH -- As a speech and debate teacher at an Idaho college, Carl W. McIntosh never gave much thought to becoming a university president.
But the college president became so impressed with his skills that he recommended McIntosh succeed him.
"He sort of fell into it," his daughter Diana McIntosh said.
McIntosh adapted quickly to the role and went on to serve as president at two other universities -- including Cal State Long Beach during the 1960s. McIntosh died Monday of natural causes at his home in Bozeman, Mont. He was 94.
McIntosh in 1959 became the second president of Cal State Long Beach -- then known as Long Beach State College -- serving until 1969.
His tenure saw large changes at the campus, with enrollment surging from about 10,000 to more than 30,000. The increase required the hiring of more faculty and the construction of about 30 new permanent buildings.
McIntosh, who was born in 1914 in Redlands,
