Building has Saroyan, furniture, radio ties - Fresno Bee
In 1937, Waxman moved the store to a larger building at 1415 Fulton St. owned by Aram Saroyan, son of famed Fresno author William Saroyan.
The two-story, 22,000-square-foot building had a basement and wide stairway leading to a mezzanine.
It featured "the latest architectural design" with curved display windows and indirect display lighting.
Waxman bought Saroyan's building in 1952. The furniture store was managed by his son-in-law, Sid Shelton.
Waxman retired in 1968 and died in 1970.
The name "H. Waxman" still can be seen in the tile floor in front of the building's front door. Today the building houses the new offices of radio stations KYNO (AM 1300) and KJWL (FM 99.3).
Q: What is the history of the Bullard family for whom Bullard Avenue was named?
-- Ronald Adams, Fresno
A: Bullard Avenue, Bullard Elementary School and Bullard High School were all named for Fresno pioneer Edgar J. Bullard.
Early-day Fresno historian Ben Walker wrote that Bullard's father, Francis "Frank" Bullard of Yolo County, bought 6,000 acres of barren, hardpan-laced land north of Fresno between the San Joaquin River and what is now Blackstone Avenue.
